Stanley Badminton Club Player Profiles |

Richard Baldwin
Since winning Blackpool's Best Junior (presented to him by none other than Barbara Dootson at the 2004 Blackpool and Fylde Badminton Awards), Richard's career has stalled somewhat.
This is not so much to do with talent on the court but the fact that he has been traipsing around the world with his girlfriend. He claims it is to widen his life experiences and see new countries.
His team-mates think it is because he didn't fancy playing for the A team in Division 3, where the standard might have been a little too much for this shy and retiring youngster. Also likes gambling but we're not allowed to put that on the website because his mum might read it.

Steve Canavan
Steve's game has been blighted by debilitating flashbacks since mistakenly believing he urinated on a puma whilst searching for his “inner self” on a holiday in Peru. Although the animal in question turned out to be Fluffy - a holiday maker's pet dog, the incident has scarred his mental approach and he now struggles to lay racquet on shuttle.
With a weakness for Danish artisans and American feminists, Steve's roving eye frequently lands him in trouble and he is currently being targeted by the South American underworld, keen to teach him to keep his hands to himself.
A passion for cartography coupled with a photographic memory has led to a stream of job offers from the Ordnance Survey. Sadly, all have been turned down as he chases his long term life goal - making the perfect sandwich.

Derek Hill
Every club has a favourite member and Derek is undoubtedly Stanley's. Renowned for his fair play and good sportsmanship, Dezza (as he's known to his team-mates) is one of a handful of long-serving members who has been at the club since it started in 1980.
Maybe not as youthful as he once was, but still a tour de force on the court. His forehand is often compared to a man beating a seal to death with a club.

Quentin James (scruffy one on the left)
Quentin returned to the courts in 2005 only to recieve a six month ban for doping offenses. Who knew the 'E' numbers in Jelly Beans were on the banned list?
The talentless, young (Hmmm) man has played for the Stanley C team just once and after being on the recieving end of a 1-17 defeat he's says he's not sure that they'll ask him back! (But his phone is always on Cath)
He has recently become a full time vagrant along with every tramps favourite stinky, scruffybag dog - Huxley. The pair can be seen wandering aimlessly around Freckleton on a regular basis, searching through the contents of rubbish bins for scraps.

Gareth 'Glass Back' Jones
Joined the club in early 2005 and quickly displayed stunning pace and skill. Sadly this was confined to taking the nets down at the end of the night, rather than any actual prowess on court.
This Lytham lad must be doing something right though as he became 'C' team captain in his first year at the club. Positives: Popular with his team-mates for his willingness to buy a drink in the pub after. Negatives: Drives like a nutter.

Paul Linney
This 49-year-old may be troubled by arthritis and gout but he continues to grit his teeth and play on. Paul's game is what could be described as continental.
He was born in Australia, but moved to Nepal at the age of three where he went on to learn the 'Van Derst Theory of Badminton' - pioneered by 1940s super-player Charles Frederick Van Derst.
Unfortunately Paul was involved in a yachting accident in 1997, completely forgot the theory and is now a shadow of his former self.

Wendy Rutter
'Quickfoot Rutter', as she's known throughout the badminton league, has been a member for more than 12 years and is a mainstay of the 'A' team.
Instantly recognisable for her choice of kit (current favourite is a sweatshirt complete with a picture of Zippy from Rainbow), Wendy overcame a problem with acute flatulence as a teenager to flourish as a badminton player and it is now generally agreed that she has the best overhead backhand smash in all seven divisions. Possibly.
